CFRE
What is the CFRE?
The Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential demonstrates an individual’s mastery of the standards set for core knowledge and skills required of fundraising executives after five years of experience. This practice-based designation requires demonstration of having met these standards through both an application and a written examination.
The Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential provides you with a recognizable demonstration of your personal and professional achievement and commitment.
Who administers/recognizes the CFRE?
The CFRE Program is governed by the CFRE Professional Certification Board. The program and the board is administered in cooperation with leading philanthropic associations:
- Association of Christian Development Professionals (ACDP)
- Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP)
- Association of Fundraising Consultants (AFC)
- Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)
- Association of Lutheran Development Executives (ALDE)
- Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP)
- Association Canadienne des Professionnels en dons Planifies (ACPDP)
- Council for Resource Development (CRD)
- Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA)
- Fundraising Institute of New Zealand (FINZ)

CFRE Exam/Application Scholarships
Two (2) partial scholarships toward CFRE Exam/Application are available in 2012.
2012 CFRE Exam/Application Scholarship
Applications will be accepted year round;
Winter Deadline is December 14, 2012
The AFP San Diego Chapter (AFPSD) is now accepting applications to help CFRE applicants partially underwrite the cost to take the CFRE Exam. AFP San Diego Chapter will provide two scholarships exclusively toward the Exam/Application fee. Travel expenses will not be covered.
The AFPSD CFRE Exam/Application Scholarship is available to two (2) AFP San Diego Chapter members, who are fundraising professionals and have a minimum of five years experience in the field. Applications will be accepted year round. The scholarship committee will select two recipients, who will be notified by the scholarship chair within three weeks after submittal of application.
The AFPSD Scholarship Committee will select the CFRE Exam/Application scholarship recipients based on the following criteria:
- Candidate must be an AFP San Diego Chapter member in good standing for at least two years.
- Candidate has served on at least two AFP committees.
- Candidate has been recommended by an AFP board member.
- Candidate is employed as a full-time fundraising professional or, if candidate is an executive director, at least 50 percent of time must be devoted to fundraising.
- Candidate applying for a scholarship is responsible for covering any difference there may be for the CFRE Exam/application fee.
- Complete an evaluation form about his/her experience within 3 months following the CFRE Exam, and submit it to the AFP Scholarship Chair. The evaluation will be shared with the AFSPD board and potentially be used as a learning tool with the general membership.
- Mentor an AFP member within two years of taking the Exam.

The AFP San Diego Chapter (AFPSD) is now accepting applications to help those seeking to take the CFRE exam to prepare by taking the Review Course. AFP San Diego Chapter will partially underwrite the cost to take the Course by providing two scholarships to be exclusively toward the cost to take the CFRE Review Course. Travel expenses are not covered.
The AFPSD CFRE Review Course Scholarship is available to two (2) AFP San Diego Chapter members, who are fundraising professionals and have a minimum of five years experience in the field. . The scholarship committee will select two recipients, who will be notified by the scholarship chair approximately three weeks after submittal.
The AFPSD Scholarship Committee will select the CFRE Review Course scholarship recipients based on the following criteria:
- Candidate must be an AFP San Diego Chapter member in good standing for at least one year.
- Candidate is employed as a full-time fundraising professional or at least 50 percent of time must be devoted to fundraising.
- Candidate applying for a scholarship is responsible for covering any difference there may be for the CFRE Review Course.
- Complete an evaluation form about your experience within 3 months following the Review Course, and submit it to the AFP Scholarship Chair. Your evaluation will be shared with the AFSPD board and potentially be used as a learning tool with the general membership.
- Candidate must agree to participate as a member of the AFPSD CFRE/Scholarship subcommittees in either 2013 or 2014.
ACFRE
What is the ACFRE?
The Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive Program is administered by the ACFRE Professional Certification Board.
Certification as ACFRE requires successful completion of four stages of the process, which must be completed sequentially: a written application, a written examination, a portfolio review, and an oral peer review.
What opportunities meet the ACFRE requirements?
Candidates for ACFRE Professional Certification should be aware that not all "advanced" or "senior executive" continuing education opportunities are acceptable for the ACFRE application process.
To be eligible, such activities must address one or more specific topics in Advanced Organizational Management or Advanced Organizational Leadership, as described in the ACFRE Application and Guidelines.
What criteria do I need to satisfy?
Those interested in pursuing an ACFRE certification must meet the following criteria:
- Have 7-10 years or more of experience in professional fundraising.
- Currently have or hope to attain a leadership or managerial role in philanthropy.
- Want to expand their knowledge and understanding of fundraising history, philosophy, and theory beyond a basic level, and/or
- Have identified the ACFRE designation as a career objective.
