About the Position: 

San Diego Blood Bank is seeking a senior development professional to be a key player in bringing to life SDBB 2.0. The San Diego Blood Bank plays a critical role in the region, ensuring a safe blood supply to patients in need. The Blood Bank is also innovating in exciting ways, including research partnerships, such as the NIH All of Us million-person study to advance precision medicine; clinical trials in cancer research; and healthcare services, such as diabetes testing.

General Purpose:

The Senior Director of Development (SDOD) is both a leader and fundraising practitioner. A primary role will be to develop and facilitate opportunities for major and principal gift fundraising. The SDOD plans, implements and leads strategies and programs for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, tracking, and stewardship of major and principal gift prospects to secure outright gifts of all levels for the San Diego Blood Bank. The SDOD leads by example organization-wide in creating and sustaining a culture of philanthropy. Serving in concert with the overall priorities of the organization, builds and implements a comprehensive community outreach plan. Incumbent serves as a liaison and coordinator across the enterprise and demonstrates expertise in understanding and articulating Blood Bank initiatives to a range of potential donors. Creates an environment that enhances communication and collaboration among colleagues, senior leadership and staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Duties include development and implementation of programs and strategies to create a growing and sustainable pipeline of philanthropic support for the San Diego Blood Bank; identifying funding sources and priorities; building and managing a portfolio of donors; cultivating and soliciting gift prospects; preparing written and oral presentations to potential donors; establishing forecasts, analytics and management improvement systems to assure that development goals are met; leading and managing the evolving philanthropy team; and briefing and staffing senior leadership and Board members for development meetings and events.

Critical Competencies:

Solid track history of securing major level gifts, staffing senior-level administrators and closing gifts ($500K and above) from individuals, corporations and foundations, both local and national.

Proven success as a development officer in a highly sophisticated donor-centered fundraising environment as a direct line fundraiser with seven (7) or more year's development experience. Higher education or healthcare experience preferred.

Demonstrated record of writing proposals for a significant project/gift ($500K+) directed to individuals and foundations/corporations.

Demonstrated success at raising funds by developing and implementing organizational and strategic communication plans that incorporate clear definition of goals, target audiences, and strategies in-line with institutional goals.

Proven experience in a complex philanthropy environment with knowledge of the full spectrum of the development process, including gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition and administration.

Strong organizational skills, with management and leadership ability, to motivate staff and act as a role model for all development operations.

Demonstrated personnel management skills to provide guidance and maintain a strong team of players. Ability to hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff, and dispense appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.

Demonstrated ability to inspire confidence by displaying a strong sense of ethical conduct that will effectively motivate staff and persuade diverse groups.

A high level of collaboration and teamwork and exceptional communication and relationship skills are expected.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Education: A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field; or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in an academic or healthcare environment.

Certifications/Licenses:    Professional fundraising certification preferred.


Physical Requirements:

  • Light to medium lifting required, seeking assistance and using provided equipment, such as cart, lift gate, etc., when necessary / indicated.
  • Must be able to work on a computer 4 8 hours a day.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly.
