The Director of Development for the School of Business (SB) is charged with major gift fundraising duties for the School. With the Dean, the director develops a comprehensive fundraising program for private support from faculty, staff, alumni, friends of SB, other individuals, corporations, and foundations to solicit donors at all levels to SB, but with particular emphasis on major gifts. The Director of Development for SB develops strategies for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors for all approved fundraising priorities at SB and other areas at USD when appropriate.
The Director of Development will report operationally to the Dean of the School of Business, while reporting administratively to the Associate Vice President of Development in University Relations. The director will be accountable to the associate vice president of development for all major gift fundraising strategies and compliance with the university’s prospect management system. The Dean will provide the director with guidance on day-to-day fundraising priorities and activities. Annual performance reviews will be conducted jointly.
The Director supervises a Development Manager, the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and other administrative or professional staff, as may be directed.

Collaboration and Support of School of Business
• Work directly with the SB deans, faculty, department heads, institutes and centers to identify, plan, coordinate and implement fundraising priorities.
• Work with faculty and SB departments to promote new relationships and enhance existing relationships with potential donors.
• Collaborate with SB Director of Marketing and Communications in promoting the business school and its mission, assist in developing communication strategies, leverage planned event content and scheduling, and identify opportunities for media coverage as required.
• Actively participate in supporting major SB goals and activities, such as student recruiting and retention, commencement, Distinguished Alumni selections, class gifts and career development and placement opportunities.
• Directly communicate with SB project managers regarding the availability and restrictions of funds.
• Serve as the project manager for the Development budget, developing and managing the annual operating plan.
• Provide regular quantitative reports to the SB leadership team and faculty regarding short and long-term fundraising goals, results and challenges.
• Consistently review accurate recording of donations in Oracle and initiate corrective actions as needed.
• Identify priority prospects for annual, special, and major gifts and implement fundraising strategies.
• Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for assigned prospects.
• Cultivate, solicit, and steward all assigned and major gift prospects for all approved fundraising priorities for SB and other areas at USD where appropriate.
• Work closely with the Assistant Director for Alumni Relations to develop relationships with alumni leading to solicitation of gifts that will result in increasing both the number and amount of contributions.
• Work closely with the Offices of Advancement Services, Foundation Relations, Alumni Relations, and Parent Relations to identify new qualified prospects.
• Work closely with the Senior Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship to provide appropriate SOB messaging and to identify new qualified President’s Club and major gift prospects.
• Work closely with the Office of Planned Giving to help secure deferred and estate gifts.
• Work closely with the SB Director of Marketing and Communications, as well as University Communications and Advancement Marketing and Strategic Partnerships, to plan and coordinate fundraising communications, publications, brochures, and special events.
• Work with appropriate personnel, when necessary, to assure the success of key special/signature events.
• Achieve fundraising goals as established by the Dean and the Associate Vice President of Development.
• Work with the Dean, the Development Manager, the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and other SB personnel, as directed, to identify and cultivate SOB Advisory Board(s) members to assist SB fundraising efforts.
• Write proposals for major gift requests for capital project naming opportunities, scholarships, Centers and Institutes, Chairs and Professorships and other priorities as determined by the Dean and SB leadership team.
• With the Dean, plan and co-host visits by prospects, donors, or their representatives.
• Identify and coordinate the efforts of volunteers and other staff members to be involved in the solicitation process, as appropriate.
• Maintain responsibility for oversight and compliance for assigned prospects under the university’s prospect management system.
• Oversee the day-to-day administration of development administration, including accurate gift processing, writing and sending thank you letters, etc.
• Work cooperatively with all fundraising staff at the university.
• Develop relationships with colleagues at peer institutions.
• Attend conferences and professional development seminars to stay current with fundraising policies and procedures.
• Participate in San Diego community events and activities as needed to represent the Dean and SOB.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; master’s degree strongly preferred.
• Minimum of seven years’ experience in fundraising, including demonstrable management and administrative skills; experience in higher education preferred. Note: additional education may be substituted for years of experience (examples: Master’s degree plus five years)
• Willingness and ability to travel.
• Proven ability to collect, analyze and present data.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
• An understanding of the full spectrum of development, including gift policies, donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, donor recognition, prospect research, high level boards, support groups and administration.
• Proven record of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts.
• Proven record of knowledge in the full spectrum of philanthropic fund development, including special gifts, major gifts, capital campaigns, annual giving, special events, prospect research, proposal development, and gift planning.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, advancement professionals, academic administrators, senior executives, and trustees of the university.
• Ability to communicate positively and effectively, both in writing and orally, with a divergent audience.
• Demonstrated ability to inspire confidence, to motivate and to persuade.
• Ability to recruit, organize, and manage salaried or volunteer personnel, as well as direct any individuals or committees of influence and affluence in fundraising protocol and competencies.
• Requires ability to drive.
