POSITION SUMMARY: San Diego Repertory Theatre is seeking a seasoned, innovative, and motivated senior development leader who desires to use their skills to make a positive impact on the REP and the San Diego community. As the REP embarks upon its fifth decade, this individual will play a critical leadership role in guiding the organization through its next phase of growth, building upon the momentum of its 40th anniversary recognition and its newly renovated facilities, and leveraging the clear strategic vision laid out for its ongoing multi-year capacity building campaign. The Director of Development serves on the REP’s senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Managing Director, and works closely with the Artistic Director and the Board to create, implement, manage, and evaluate a strategic fundraising plan, aided through their use of sophisticated software tools (e.g. Tessitura). The Director of Development will be a hands-on and deeply involved fundraiser, providing exceptional leadership and management for all aspects of fundraising and development related activities, while effectively managing their department and mentoring their team, sharing a deep commitment to the mission of the REP. Working closely with marketing, the development team helps to support a total organizational budget of approximately $4.5 million. As the first phase of the REP’s capacity building campaign nears completion, the Director of Development will be responsible for integrating the next phase into on-going development activities, to achieve a combined contributed revenue goal of $2.5 million. In future years, the Director of Development will employ existing and create new strategies to maintain that level of giving, aided by the four members of the Development team.

 ORGANIZATION: San Diego Repertory Theatre, now in its 42nd season, is San Diego’s third largest professional non-profit theatre. Its provocative work of world premieres and brilliant contemporary plays have been recognized with over 200 awards for artistic excellence. The REP is recognized as a national leader in audience engagement, and has a unique artistic reputation for celebrating and engaging diverse communities, having produced over 70 plays by artists of color and hosting two annual festivals celebrating Jewish and African American culture as well as a Latinx New Play Festival. The REP produces and hosts over 550 events and performances a year on its three stages and art galleries, as the resident and managing company of the city’s Lyceum Theatre.

COMMUNITY: San Diego REP is located in San Diego’s vibrant downtown. On the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, approximately 2 hours south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico, San Diego is the eighth largest city in the U.S., with a population of 1.3 million / 3 million in the County. San Diego is known for its mild year-round climate, natural harbor, extensive beaches, natural open spaces, association with the U.S. Navy, and as a center of communications technology and biotechnology development. San Diego, home to several colleges and universities, ranks as the ninth most educated city in the United States. It has a rich cultural life, with a many professional theatres, music and dance companies, and museums. It also provides many year-round opportunities to pursue fitness related activities. San Diego is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse places in the nation; with race and Hispanic origin of approximately 46% Non-Hispanic White, 33% Hispanic or Latino, 12% Asian, 5% African American, 4% two or more races, and 1% Native American.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Works collaboratively with the REP’s management to support the artistic vision, advance the mission, and attain the organization’s goals, while embracing its values (i.e. virtuosity, diversity, citizenship, collaborative partnerships, emotional engagement, open mindedness, curiosity). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the principal fundraising strategist and development officer for San Diego REP
  • Participate as a member of the senior leadership team to evaluate opportunities and determine organizational best practices.
  • Create and implement a strategic development plan that supports the vision of the organization, and addresses the needs and concerns of each donor and prospect.
  • Provide leadership for planning, creating and executing all fundraising activities, including foundation, corporate, government, and individual donor solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship for annual operations, major gifts, planned giving, sponsorships, and capacity building, as well as special events, to ensure a stream of contributed revenue
  • Serve as staff lead for fundraising campaigns, undertake primary responsibility for major donor interaction, and maintain a portfolio of key donors and foundation relationships.
  • Establish development policies, systems, and procedures that maximize resources.
  • Oversee all day-to-day operations of the Development Department, managing the department’s 4-member staff and planning and managing its income & expense budgets
  • Guide the strategic fundraising use of Tessitura and other development communication tools for communicating contacts, maximizing relationships, and creating reports.
  • Generate content for San Diego REP publications.
  • Act as liaison with the Board of Trustees.
  • Attend various San Diego REP performances, events, and activities.
  • Become involved in the local community and develop a rapport with key players.

 QUALIFICATIONS: An experienced senior level fundraising professional with proven ability to successfully manage and lead the development team’s attainment of an annual contributed revenue goal of at $2.5 million, who is/has:

  • A strong interest in and passion for the arts and a belief in their inherent value.
  • Extensive knowledge in the tools and techniques of fundraising and their application.
  • Ability to construct a fundraising strategic plan, and lead its implementation, monitoring, and successful execution to achieve the contributed revenue goals.
  • Committed to working with diverse colleagues and community populations.
  • Demonstrated abilities in building and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships.
  • The ability to motivate and inspire fellow team members and volunteers to achieve goals
  • Strong computer skills and a solid understanding of contact management systems, donor research, and other donor relations tools; experience with Tessitura a plus.
  • The capacity to embrace challenges and thrive in an environment where creative ideas, intellectual curiosity, independent thinking, personal accountability, and close collegial relationships are appreciated.
  • Exhibits diplomacy and discretion and adheres to the highest ethical standards
  • An advanced degree or certification in nonprofit management and/or fundraising preferred
  • Ability to adjust their schedule as needed for support at functions, which frequently occur on evenings and weekends.
