Company: Anza Borrego Foundation
Date Posted: February 2, 2017

Sterling Search Inc. has been exclusively retained to recruit for the new Executive Director for the Anza Borrego Foundation (“ABF”).

Escape city life and immerse yourself with a mission focused on conservation, education and research in the largest state park in California. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the wonders of the California Desert with five hundred miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas, miles of hiking trails and a rich array of flora and fauna.  Described as San Diego’s Yellowstone Park, a mere two-hour drive from San Diego, Riverside, and Palm Springs, this rare opportunity offers the ideal candidate the ability to make a meaningful impact and ensure the wonders of the park are here to cherish for generations to come.  ABF has a big job – raising funds and awareness that protect the 650,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park – and seeks a dynamic, detailed, and thoughtful leader to become the next Executive Director. The Executive Director is a full-time position reporting directly to the Board President.

For 50 years, ABF has worked alongside Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to ensure a sustainable desert. ABF protects the futures of more than 1,500 species of plants and animals, as well as the wilderness experience for the nearly 2 million visitors who enjoy the park each year. There always have been and will be threats to this region.  ABF exists to ensure that individuals, corporations and governments value our desert for all of its unique characteristics.

ABF doesn’t just advocate and protect land, they approach conservation as a strategic process that leads to a greater understanding and appreciation for California’s dwindling wilderness. Their programs for land acquisition, stewardship, education, interpretation and research are interdependent and the root of their success.  Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and this region is not just a vast wild landscape for recreation and inspiration, but a living laboratory and classroom as well. Without ABF, this desert would fail to thrive.

ABF’s annual revenue is in the range of $2.2 million (fiscal year ended June 30, 2016), which includes $1.7 million in investments. In the next 5 years, ABF envisions increasing the scope and size of the organization’s impact by expanding their reach to a wider audience in neighboring counties and coastal communities.

This is a career-making position that will lead a team of 7, have a heavy external focus and serve in partnership with Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Additionally, the Board of Trustees and Board President are all invested in a culture of philanthropy.  ABF has a Board of Trustees comprised of well-respected, esteemed professionals who are dedicated, devoted and inspired to carry out the mission of the organization and ensure the future of the desert.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Board of Trustees in identifying and recruiting additional board members as the momentum continues to shift from grass roots fundraising to a more philanthropic-based funding model. It is anticipated that the Board of Trustees will reach 100% giving this fiscal year.

The Board of Trustees is focused on hiring a new Executive Director who will lead a team, increase awareness of the mission and grow the base of support resulting in significant growth in revenue.  Therefore, the Executive Director, amongst other important attributes, must bring a working knowledge and demonstrated track record of managing and implementing a successful robust diversified fundraising program.

With lofty yet do-able goals, the new Executive Director will be charged with building on ABF’s track record of success by further developing the organization’s vision, and achieving its goals for continued financial stability, community engagement and enhancing the impact of its’ program and mission for those they serve.

The Executive Director position will be based in either Borrego Springs or in the San Diego area.  ABF offers a comprehensive compensation package.

The mission of Anza-Borrego Foundation is to protect and preserve the natural landscapes, wildlife habitat and cultural heritage of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.
